Personal Statement
Experienced * Skilled * Knowledgeable * Hardworking
Experience as the Coordinator of firstly the Self Access Centre (SAC) and lately the Online Materials Development (OMD) departments at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), where I have led, trained and supported small teams, developed and expanded the capability and capacity of the departments, and introduced a range of online and e-learning innovations that have greatly benefitted both the students and staff alike. I am a capable and innovative user of HTML, Javascript and CSS, especially with Xerte Online Toolkits and on Moodle. I have a proven ability to organise a team of people, and to prioritise and allocate tasks and projects and to supervise work being undertaken. I can effectively evaluate and critique work done by others, and offer informed, useful feedback.
During 2020, I have been on committees and in groups that have led huge change in how courses are delivered, and students assessed at UNNC. I was responsible for leading the change to all Centre for English Language Education (CELE) teaching being online at the beginning of the spring semester and successfully managed this transition. This included developing an innovative e-assessment system that was used multiple times by all CELE students instead of face-to-face exams. I was also part of a group assessing, piloting and ultimately introducing remote proctoring of exams for all faculties on campus (winning an award for doing so). Much of the work in these two initiatives was to change perceptions of teaching staff, and then train and support them. I am still involved in a group tasked with producing a Digital Strategy for UNNC, which will introduce alternative online teaching and learning models, underpin them pedagogically, and provide examples, templates and models of how such courses could look, and ultimately determine support structures to enable such changes.
As the Coordinator of OMD I have developed systems and programmes to expand the uptake and use of e-learning, blended learning and online resources within CELE. I have also been directly responsible for evaluating teaching and learning and assessment technologies for use by the wider teaching body, and have advised on and led training, support and extension initiatives for any platforms introduced.
My IT and multimedia skills are very strong. While working at UNNC, I have been one of the leading users of Xerte and Moodle and a variety of multimedia resource production platforms. I am able to record and edit video and audio and present such resources in very accessible and interactive formats for students. I have taken courses and read widely on design in e-learning and the uses of multimedia within education and now have considerable knowledge and experience in these fields.
I have been at the forefront of the deployment and use of Moodle within CELE and across UNNC. I was the UNNC representative on the University’s VLE Implementation Board, and have been heavily involved in the use of Moodle in CELE since its inception. This has included staff training and refresher courses, recently designing and implementing a new “look” for the CELE modules, along with developing innovative ways to use Moodle for blended learning and assessment.
During the past few years, I have initiated, led and cooperated on projects with different departments and faculties at UNNC. These include planning, developing and implementing the very successful CELE-Year 2 Transition Online summer courses, developing staff training for IT, and in conjunction with Residential College and Admissions developing a pre-arrival course for students to be available as soon as they register with the university. I have led XOT training sessions for teaching and admin staff from CELE, the Language Centre, Engineering, and English departments. I have also worked on many online materials projects within CELE cooperating with, for example, Knowledge Exchange, Content tutors and various EAP Senior Tutors.
I have developed and taught on a wide range of courses and modules in addition to the CELE EAP courses and teacher training courses. While with the SAC, I developed and taught the LEAP and ELFIS courses, wrote and led many different skill, supplementary support and revision seminars and workshops, and gave lectures as part of the Induction Week and the Science and Maths content modules.
I am well organised, efficient and work well under pressure and can meet deadlines. I write well in a wide range of genres, including reports, research papers, presentations, and applications. My work is error-free and I am well known as an efficient, accurate proofreader for academic writing, applications and other materials. I am able to easily interact with a wide variety of people, am a confident public speaker and enjoy being in challenging situations where quick thinking, adaptability and resourcefulness are required.
